商売繁盛と、たくさんの良いご縁が訪れることを願って描いた作品です。
招き猫は、私がお店から依頼を受けてよく描く題材のひとつです。けれど猫をそのまま描くのも味気ない——そう思い、少しひねりを加えて、招き猫を擬人化した猫の娘として描きました。
「千万両」の大判小判を掲げ、手を挙げてお客さまを招くその姿を見て、ふっと肩の力が抜けて、ほっこりしてもらえたら。一日の疲れが、そっと癒えるように。堅苦しくなく、眺めているだけで気持ちがゆるむ——そんな絵にしたいと思って描きました。人の集まる場所の雰囲気を、明るく和ませてくれるはずです。
この絵はもともと、あるお店へ贈ったことがきっかけで生まれました。今もそのお店に長く飾っていただいており、「店が明るくなった」「人が集まる」と喜んでいただけたことが、この作品を多くの方へお届けしたいと思うようになった始まりです。
【招き猫に込めた願い】
招き猫は、江戸時代に生まれたとされる、福を招く縁起物です。挙げる手によって招くものが異なり、この作品の猫娘は「左手」を挙げています。左手は「人を招く手」——千客万来、良縁、良好な人間関係を願う方にぴったりとされています。
また、招く手の高さにも意味があります。この絵の手は、あえて耳より少し低い位置に。遠く大きな幸運を一度に招くのではなく、身近な福を、着実に招き寄せる仕草です。店を一足飛びに大きくするのではなく、一歩一歩、確かに育てていく——そんな商いを願う方に寄り添う一枚です。
猫の毛色は、古くから福を呼ぶとされる三毛。白は開運招福、赤は健康長寿、黒は魔除け。さまざまなご縁と福を、そっと運んでくれますように。
背景に敷いたのは、日本の伝統的な吉祥文様「七宝（しっぽう）」。円（丸）が途切れず連なるこの柄は、「円」が「縁」に通じることから、円満・調和・ご縁が続いていくことを願う縁起の良い文様です。人と人とのご縁は、七つの宝と同じだけ尊いもの——そんな意味も込められています。掲げた大判の「富」と、背景に広がる「ご縁」。どちらも絶えず巡りますようにという願いを、画面いっぱいに込めました。
そして猫の娘が抱えているのは、「千万両」の大判小判。今のお金に換算すると、なんと一兆円ほど（諸説あります・笑）。江戸の世にもありえない途方もない額を、こともなげに掲げてしまうところに、「どうせ願うなら、大きく、朗らかに」という遊び心を込めました。ケチな願いより、笑ってしまうくらい大きな福を——そんな大らかな一枚です。

A Thousand Guests (The Beckoning Cat)

I painted this wishing prosperity on a business, and a great many good connections along with it.
The beckoning cat is a subject I am often asked for by shops. But painting the cat plainly felt flat to me, so I gave it a turn: here she is as a girl, the maneki-neko in human form.
She holds up gold coins and raises a hand to call customers in. If the sight of her loosens your shoulders a little and warms you, that is what I was after. If a day's tiredness eases off quietly. Nothing stiff about it, a painting that lets you relax just by looking. It should brighten and soften the air of any place where people gather.
This piece began as a gift to a particular shop. It still hangs there. Hearing that the shop felt brighter, that people came, is what made me want to put this work into more hands.
◆ What is held in the beckoning cat
The maneki-neko is a good-luck figure said to have been born in the Edo period, a cat that calls fortune in. Which paw it raises changes what it calls. This one raises her left.
The left paw is the hand that calls people. It suits anyone hoping for a steady stream of customers, for good connections, for relationships that go well.
The height of the raised paw carries meaning too. Hers is set deliberately a little below the ear. It is not the gesture of calling in one enormous distant fortune all at once, but of drawing near fortune steadily toward you. Not a shop made large in a single leap, but one raised surely, a step at a time. This piece keeps company with that kind of trade.
Her coat is calico, the pattern held since long ago to call in good luck. White for fortune arriving, red for health and long life, black to turn away harm. May it carry all manner of connections and fortune to you, quietly.
The background is shippo, one of the traditional auspicious patterns of Japan, sometimes called the seven treasures. Circles link without breaking, one into the next. In Japanese the word for circle, en, is the same sound as the word for a bond between people, and so the pattern stands for harmony, accord, and connections that go on continuing. There is another reading in it: that the bonds between people are as precious as seven treasures. The gold she holds up is wealth. The pattern behind her is connection. I filled the whole surface with the wish that both keep circling without end.
And what she is carrying is senmanryo, ten million ryo in Edo currency. Converted into today's money, something close to a trillion yen, depending on who you ask. A sum that could not have existed even in the Edo world, held aloft as though it were nothing. That is the play in the piece: if you are going to wish, wish big, and wish cheerfully. Not some stingy little request, but fortune large enough to make you laugh.

For orders placed and delivered within Japan, I will inscribe the name of your shop or business into the piece at no additional charge, set by hand with care for how it sits against the artwork.
This service is not available on international orders. Inscribing a name requires checking the exact spelling and placement with you beforehand, and on international orders I have no way to reach the buyer directly. Rather than risk getting your name wrong on a piece made only once, I would rather not offer it than offer it badly.
International orders ship as pictured, without an inscription.

Drawn entirely by hand on iPad, from first composition to final detail. This is an original digital painting by the artist. It is not AI-generated.
◆ Giclee printing
The original artwork is printed with archival pigment inks using the giclee process: 9 to 12 inks, capable of holding gradations and fine texture that ordinary printing flattens out. It is the method used for reproducing fine art and photographic work, valued for both color fidelity and longevity.
Printed on either an HP DesignJet Z9+ PS (B0) or an Epson SureColor SC-P9550, selected per piece according to the artwork and the paper used.

A gold dessin frame, chosen to meet the color of the work. The glazing is UV-cut acrylic, blocking approximately 97% of ultraviolet light to slow fading and color shift.
Longevity depends on where the piece is kept. Light, temperature and humidity all play a part.
