This is one of those pieces. Jikokuten guards the eastern quarter. His name carries the sense of holding a country steady and keeping it at peace. He is the deity who protects the land and the lives lived on it, and who keeps order among them. What I wanted to hold in this figure is a discipline: keep order, and live your days by a rule. This piece is that resolve, put down in an image. Bishamonten guards the northern quarter. He is the deity who stands at the hardest side of the compass and does not give ground. The wish to lean on someone lives in every heart. But to walk a chosen road straight, I wanted to keep one hard thing inside me. When I thought about what that would look like, I painted Bishamonten, the figure of a teacher who holds you to a standard without softening it. His expression is severe. But the severity is not there to punish. It is there so that whoever stands before it can keep asking what the severity is for. I painted it as the kind of hardness that makes a person check themselves, reflect, stay humble, and take one more step forward. Behind him, the dragon traces a figure eight. Past severity there is always abundance, always flourishing. I put into that shape my wish that you come through to the other side. Bishamonten is also the deity of treasure and abundance. Beyond the hardness, there is a harvest. Underfoot he treads a hungry ghost: the grasping mind that never learns to be satisfied. Press down on desire that knows no limit. Fix your aim and see it through. Do not waver. Do not bend. Do not retreat. For anyone facing an examination, a trial, or a large difficulty. This piece is that resolve, put down in an image. Bishamonten guards the northern quarter. He is the deity who stands at the hardest side of the compass and does not give ground. The wish to lean on someone lives in every heart. But to walk a chosen road straight, I wanted to keep one hard thing inside me. When I thought about what that would look like, I painted Bishamonten, the figure of a teacher who holds you to a standard without softening it. His expression is severe. But the severity is not there to punish. It is there so that whoever stands before it can keep asking what the severity is for. I painted it as the kind of hardness that makes a person check themselves, reflect, stay humble, and take one more step forward. Behind him, the dragon traces a figure eight. Past severity there is always abundance, always flourishing. I put into that shape my wish that you come through to the other side. Bishamonten is also the deity of treasure and abundance. Beyond the hardness, there is a harvest. Underfoot he treads a hungry ghost: the grasping mind that never learns to be satisfied. Press down on desire that knows no limit. The beckoning cat is a subject I am often asked for by shops. But painting the cat plainly felt flat to me, so I gave it a turn: here she is as a girl, the maneki-neko in human form. She holds up gold coins and raises a hand to call customers in. If the sight of her loosens your shoulders a little and warms you, that is what I was after. If a day's tiredness eases off quietly. Nothing stiff about it, a painting that lets you relax just by looking. It should brighten and soften the air of any place where people gather. This piece began as a gift to a particular shop. It still hangs there. Hearing that the shop felt brighter, that people came, is what made me want to put this work into more hands. ◆ What is held in the beckoning cat The maneki-neko is a good-luck figure said to have been born in the Edo period, a cat that calls fortune in. Which paw it raises changes what it calls. This one raises her left. The left paw is the hand that calls people. It suits anyone hoping for a steady stream of customers, for good connections, for relationships that go well. The height of the raised paw carries meaning too. Hers is set deliberately a little below the ear. It is not the gesture of calling in one enormous distant fortune all at once, but of drawing near fortune steadily toward you. Not a shop made large in a single leap, but one raised surely, a step at a time. This piece keeps company with that kind of trade. Her coat is calico, the pattern held since long ago to call in good luck. White for fortune arriving, red for health and long life, black to turn away harm. May it carry all manner of connections and fortune to you, quietly. The background is shippo, one of the traditional auspicious patterns of Japan, sometimes called the seven treasures. Circles link without breaking, one into the next. In Japanese the word for circle, en, is the same sound as the word for a bond between people, and so the pattern stands for harmony, accord, and connections that go on continuing. There is another reading in it: that the bonds between people are as precious as seven treasures. The gold she holds up is wealth. The pattern behind her is connection. I filled the whole surface with the wish that both keep circling without end. And what she is carrying is senmanryo, ten million ryo in Edo currency. The beckoning cat is a subject I am often asked for by shops. But painting the cat plainly felt flat to me, so I gave it a turn: here she is as a girl, the maneki-neko in human form. She holds up gold coins and raises a hand to call customers in. If the sight of her loosens your shoulders a little and warms you, that is what I was after. If a day's tiredness eases off quietly. Nothing stiff about it, a painting that lets you relax just by looking. It should brighten and soften the air of any place where people gather. This piece began as a gift to a particular shop. It still hangs there. Hearing that the shop felt brighter, that people came, is what made me want to put this work into more hands. ◆ What is held in the beckoning cat The maneki-neko is a good-luck figure said to have been born in the Edo period, a cat that calls fortune in. Which paw it raises changes what it calls. This one raises her left. The left paw is the hand that calls people. It suits anyone hoping for a steady stream of customers, for good connections, for relationships that go well. The height of the raised paw carries meaning too. Hers is set deliberately a little below the ear. It is not the gesture of calling in one enormous distant fortune all at once, but of drawing near fortune steadily toward you. Asking myself what that figure was, the stance of kyudo, Japanese archery, came into focus. You draw, you release the arrow, and even after it has gone you do not let your attention break. Archery has a word for this: zanshin, the mind that remains. The release is not the end. You keep something of yourself there, and you are already ready for what follows. The further I read into it, the more it struck me how deep a discipline of the heart this is. Archery is among the oldest of the Japanese martial arts, carried down since the age of the Genpei wars, and it holds something essential in the spirit of this country. I wanted to paint that composure again, now. What lies beyond the released arrow is the turning of the seasons. Cherry blossom in spring, green in summer, red leaves in autumn, snow in winter. They fall onto the surface of the water and link together there in circles. Time flies like an arrow. Left alone, four seasons pass in no time at all. Having started down a new road, I have no time left to waste, and that resolve is what I put into this piece. To walk toward what you are aiming at, steadily. What holds a resolve like that upright is the composure of zanshin. And yet, if you only look ahead, the now beneath your feet goes unseen. Did you notice the ducks in the distance, a parent and its young? To a gaze in a hurry to get on, that small family is invisible. Taste this hour, take pleasure in it. That wish is set quietly into the painting as well. Move toward what you are aiming at, inside time that passes quickly. But hold the present dear, one step and then the next, feet on the ground. Asking myself what that figure was, the stance of kyudo, Japanese archery, came into focus. You draw, you release the arrow, and even after it has gone you do not let your attention break. Archery has a word for this: zanshin, the mind that remains. The release is not the end. You keep something of yourself there, and you are already ready for what follows. The further I read into it, the more it struck me how deep a discipline of the heart this is. Archery is among the oldest of the Japanese martial arts, carried down since the age of the Genpei wars, and it holds something essential in the spirit of this country. I wanted to paint that composure again, now. What lies beyond the released arrow is the turning of the seasons. Cherry blossom in spring, green in summer, red leaves in autumn, snow in winter. They fall onto the surface of the water and link together there in circles. Time flies like an arrow. Left alone, four seasons pass in no time at all. Having started down a new road, I have no time left to waste, and that resolve is what I put into this piece. To walk toward what you are aiming at, steadily. What holds a resolve like that upright is the composure of zanshin. And yet, if you only look ahead, the now beneath your feet goes unseen. Did you notice the ducks in the distance, a parent and its young? To a gaze in a hurry to get on, that small family is invisible. Taste this hour, take pleasure in it. That wish is set quietly into the painting as well. Move toward what you are aiming at, inside time that passes quickly. But hold the present dear, one step and then the next, feet on the ground.
